We do like to live beside the seaside

The health benefits of the mineral-rich ocean and invigorating sea air have been known about since early times. From the Ancient Greeks through the Victorian era to more recent decades, medical practitioners have prescribed a stay by the sea to increase a patient’s well-being, moods, breathing and circulation.

Indeed, recent scientific research has shown measureable benefits of the sea air, waves and sea water for us all. It is no surprise then that the South and South West’s coastal towns are a preferred destination for many looking for a change of pace and lifestyle.

But what is it really like for older people to live in seaside towns all year round? PegasusLife has 30 years’ experience of providing specialist apartments for the over 60’s and their coastal developments are amongst the most popular. Karen Roake explains: “Retiring to the sea – in the UK or overseas – is a dream for many because it usually evokes happy holiday memories and the seaside really does make everyone feel happier and healthier.”

Karen adds: “Coastal towns with a rich variety of clubs and year-round activities tend to attract the most downsizers – especially in the South and South West where the climate is normally milder than other parts of Britain.  The most popular towns are those with a prosperous, stable economy and a vibrant mix of events, clubs and activities to attract people of all ages.”

Bob Camp who has lived at Pegasus Court in Exmouth for four years agrees: “The allure of the sea is undeniable and I chose Exmouth because there is such a good mix of people living here and very good amenities in the town for young and old, working and retired, locals and visitors – there is always something going on. I am so pleased I moved here.”

Karen concludes: “I would urge anyone thinking of moving to the coast to visit their chosen location a few times first. Nowhere looks appealing on a wet Wednesday morning in February, but that shouldn’t sway you – it is the people, the atmosphere, facilities and year round activities that will determine which town suits you best.”
