perfectpartyhairIf you want the perfect finish to your evening wear, you’ve got to go for a bold hair statement – whether it’s luscious shiny locks, grungy waves or a standout retro up-do, we’ve got this season’s hairstyles covered!

The beehive

Bouffants and beehives have made a recent comeback and though a little more effort than your normal up-do, they’re definitely worth it for a hint of fifties glamour. Whether you want to rock a full on Winehouse number or a more petite hive, here’s how to recreate this classic style.

  1. Divide your hair into two sections from ear to ear across the top of your head. Clip the front section to keep it out of the way.
  2. Brush the back section into a high twist, pulling the ends to the crown of your head. Slide large hair grips down through the fold of the twist attaching it firmly to the back of your head. Spray it with hairspray.
  3. Part the front section into a heavy side parting and brush it across your forehead. Sweep around the twist and pin with a grip. Finish by smoothing down any fly-aways with hairspray.

Stylist’s tip: Massive amounts of volume is the key for this look. Apply SP Elegant Shape (£13.59, Wella) to wet hair to build up the volume and to protect against heat styling, says Anya Dellicompagni, director of hairdressing at Francesco Group (www.francescogroup.co.uk).

The waves
Polished curls of the past have had an edgy urban update in the last few years. The deconstructed wave is a much more wearable style for modern women who don’t have time to fiddle with rollers in the morning. Think of singer Florence Welch’s red-haired take on grunge chic.

  1. This do works best on long, medium-thick hair, with day-old texture. You can create the grungy look by running a texturising paste through the mid-lengths when damp.
  2. Wrap the damp hair into a loose bun on the top of your head and use your dryer’s diffuser over the bun. Once almost dry run your fingers through the curls to give them a more dishevelled appearance.
  3. If the curls look flat, use large tongues to create loose spirals. Scrunching styling cream into the end will add to the aged texture and help the waves stay.

Stylist’s tip: Hair looks a lot more texturised by weaving highlights through the main body colour. ‘The colours must carry the same tone so they blend together. Choose from warm rich browns from chocolate to toffee,’ notes Alison Dace, head of the Saks art team (www.saks.co.uk).

Straight hair
Chic and classic, straight hair is always in style. Most of us don’t get out of bed and look like Demi Moore or Gwyneth Paltrow, though. With a little help from a good pair of straightening irons, and a fewhandy hints, you’ll have a redcarpet Gwynnie gloss in no time.

  1. Use an anti-static bristle brush and a powerful hairdryer with a nozzle and take small sections of wet hair, the same width and depth of the brush. Blow-dry the sections from the root, keeping the airflow down
  2. as this will smooth the cuticle and emphasise shine. Repeat this process throughout the hair to take out all the curl, and ensure the look lasts.
  3. Before repeating this process with straightening irons, spritz the hair with heat protection spray to protect from heat damage. Straighten the hair in the same downward direction using the anti-static bristle brush.
  4. Finish with anti-frizz serum and a good quality hairspray, and the look should last for two to three days.

Stylist’s tip: ‘Whenever you apply a touch of hairspray or spray gloss afterwards, spray it into the airand walk through the mist for even distribution and real A-list shine,’ advises Karine Jackson, creative director of Organic Colour Systems (www.organiccoloursystems.co.uk).

The up-do
Whatever the occasion, a glamorous up style oozes confidence and makes a statement. Mess up your do to give a contemporary, edgy twist that looks like you’ve just breezed out the door.

  1. Blow-dry sections of the hair with a round-barrelled brush, lifting at the root and curling round for a soft curl. If you have time, put a large sections of hair into heated rollers
  2. as this will help maintain the body of the style.
  3. Sweep the hair into a side parting and begin back-combing the hair at the roots in different sections. Pin sections of hair into place, one on top of the other and start to build your desired shape.
  4. Tease some sections of the hair out to give a soft textured finish to the style and spray with a strong hold hairspray to keep in place.

Stylist’s tip: ‘This can be quite an organic style, which can alter each time you try it. The main thing is to achieve volume. If you are short for time, spray some dry shampoo into the roots and massage. It gives an instant lift,’ Seung-ki-Baek, stylist at RUSH Hair (www.rush.co.uk).
