Top Easter DIY tips from Celebrity guru

Easter weekend is almost upon us and if you are like many other people up and down the country you are probably planning on tackling some DIY jobs around the house.

One of the most commonly undertaken jobs is laying laminate flooring but its also one of those jobs that is easy to do badly.

To help you get ready for the biggest DIY weekend the UK sees all year round we are delighted to bring you some top tips from Celebrity DIY guru Craig Phillips (he of Big Brother #1 fame), courtesy of one of our DIY partners, leading tool brand, Ryobi Power Tools. This is what Craig advises:

Nothing changes the look and feel of a room like new flooring.  Following these top tips will help take the stress out of laying a laminate floor.

Materials :

  • Click-fit laminate flooring
  • Underlay
  • Beading/skirting
  • Packs/spacers

Tools :

  • Chop saw
  • Jigsaw
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Pulling bar
  • Hammer
  • Hammering block

Work out the quantity of flooring you require by measuring the length and width of the room and multiplying them to get the floor area in m².

Cover the whole floor area with underlay.

Working from left to right, click together your first row of flooring.

Top Tip: When you get to the edge of the room use a chop saw to quickly and accurately cut the laminate to fit.

Use a pulling bar to clip in the cut panels at the room’s edge, and ensure you leave a 10mm to 20mm expansion gap around all four edges of the room.

Lay the second row starting with the off cut, again from the left hand side this will stager all joints and avoid any waste.

Once the first two rows are in place, repeat this process for the rest of the room.

Top Tip: Use a jigsaw to cut external corners and curves

Cover all expansion gaps with skirting board/quad bead.

So there you have it folks, no excuses for messing it up. Let us know what DIY jobs you are planning and any tips you might have in the comments below. Good luck this weekend!
