Greener than you
With new research saying that city slickers are more eco-conscious than country bumpkins, at home are here to offer our expert advice on how to green up your life…
If you live in a big city and have a good job, you’re more likely to have a much greener mind and be more environmentally friendly than those living in the countryside. According to experts, city dwellers are most likely to recycle, volunteer for environmental organisations and engage in other green initiatives because of pressure from work colleagues and large corporations. As well as this, they face greater threat from environmental problems, making them more likely to engage in green behaviours.
Scientists at the Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability (CSIS) at Michigan State University led the study along with collaborators in the United States and China. They analysed the results of China’s General Social Survey, which asked people whether they recycled their rubbish, chatted about eco issues with friends and family or took park in any environmental programs and found that those who lived in cities had far more ‘greener’ attitudes.
