Blueberries: the slimming super-fruit
Whether you choose to have them as a snack or sprinkle them over your cereal, make sure you add blueberries into your diet – especially if you’re trying to slim down for summer. Experts say that these brilliant berries can slash the number of fat cells in the body by up to three-quarters, helping you lose those stubborn pounds.
But how? Well, blueberries, rich in antioxidants and known for their cancer-fighting properties, are packed with polyphenols, a group of chemicals with potential health benefits. Using mice tissue, researchers looked at the effect of polyphenols in blueberries had in fighting the development of fat cells and breaking down fats within the body.
Tests revealed that high doses of polyphenols reduce the number of fat cells in the body by 73%, while smaller doses cut fat by over a qaurter at 27%.
Study author Shiwani Moghe from Texas Women’s University, who presented the results at the Exoerimental Biology 2011 meeting for the American Society for Nutrition, said the study showed ‘promise’. She added: “We still need to test this dose in humans, to make sure there are no adverse effects and to see if the doses are effective.
“The promise is there for blueberries to help reduce fat tissue from forming in the body.”
