The Raw Deal

kimchee slaw_salad_19_07_12The summer holiday season is upon us and whether you’re preparing to get your bikini on, or need a detox after holiday overindulgence, it’s time to throw the fad diets and detoxes out of the window and try the raw food plan.

If you’re not a fan of the hardcore detox or replacement shake diets, and lets face it, how many of us really are, why not try the gentler version. A raw food week will give your body the cleanse that it deserves, kick start your weight loss and leave you feeling fabulous.

The basics of this plan are essentially a vegan, or vegetarian diet; after all, raw chicken is not a good idea. The biggest benefit of eating raw means that you are cutting out all processed food, thus eliminating bad fats, additives and preservatives. Your body will digest the food more efficiently and you’ll never feel bloated or sluggish after a meal. Raw foods are full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. You immune system will be boosted and you’ll feel energised and lighter, and who wouldn’t want that?

Don’t be fooled by the thought of vegetarian or vegan meals always being boring. Searching on the internet will return thousands of meal ideas and recipes. Check out for tons of gorgeous, easy and tasty meal ideas. Here’s our own amazingly simple and immensely tantalising Kimche Slaw Salad recipe to help you get started.

Kimche Slaw Salad
For two very generous portions you need:

1 Red onion
7 – 10 Radishes
1/2 A cabbage, Chinese cabbage works well
2 Large carrots
1 Lime
1 tbsp Extra virgin olive oil
Chilli Flakes
A handful of fresh coriander
Sesame seeds
Salt and pepper to taste

Peel and halve onion and carrots. Wash your radishes and cabbage. Using the shred attachment on you food processor, shred the veg together and transfer to a large bowl. Drizzle the olive oil over the veg. Cut the lime in half and squeeze the juice into the bowl. Add a few decent pinches of salt and pepper and as many, of few, chilli flakes as desired. Use your hands to ‘toss’ the salad, making sure you squeeze the veg mix as you go. This will condense the ingredients together, giving it the slaw texture. Finish with a generous sprinkle of sesame seeds.

With celebrities such as Alicia Silverstone, Demi Moore and supermodel Carol Alt rumoured to be fans of the raw food diet, it’s hard to find a reason not to try it!
