If you like Colin Firth, you’ll love South Devon

The world’s attention is about to shine on South Devon when The Mercy, starring Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz, goes on public release in early 2017.

Filmed by James Marsh, director of the Theory of Everything, the film, shot largely in Teignmouth, tells the dramatic tale of Donald Crowhurst’s fateful attempt to win the Sunday Times Golden Globe yacht race – a solo around the world yacht race – in 1968/69.

Shot during a glorious spell of weather, the film is expected to put Teignmouth, Shaldon, the South Devon coastline, and the Teign Estuary on the must visit list for 2017. That means one thing. If you’re considering a visit to this beguilingly beautiful part of the world, you’d be well advised to book early.

Top tips for Teignmouth:

Food

  • The Crab Shack deli and seafood restaurant is a must.  You can see where filming took place on the River Beach.
  • Check out Pavillions Teignmouth. Its new bar provides food and beer and a killer view of Teignmouth beach and the Grand Pier.
  • Catch the oldest foot passenger ferry in England to Shaldon; discover lovely pubs, the beachfront Clipper Café and the award-winning café-ODE.

Hidden beaches

Descend through Shaldon’s smugglers’ tunnel to a hidden beach.   The kids will love it and while there you can also visit Shaldon Zoo, reputed to be the smallest zoo in England.

Get wet

If you fancy a spot of kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, sea kayaking, sailing, windsurfing, jet skiing or powerboating, Teignmouth’s SeaSports Southwest team are well worth a visit.
