How to create a simple personalised handmade gift

This year, why not add a personal touch to your gifts by creating something a bit more special in a few simple steps.

Create a personalised sewing kit, with a jam jar and left over fabric.

Using a screw lid of a Kilner jar with a lid and band, you can easily make a small little pin cushion making it easy to keep your pins all in one place. With a piece of scrap fabric, use the lid of the jar to draw out a circle of the same size on the wrong side of the fabric. Increase the circle by about 1” and cut around the larger circle. To create the pin cushion you can use cotton balls or toy stuffing, both work just as well.

Layer the fabric, stuffing and the lid then create a sandwich inside the band. Press the lid down so that the stuffing and fabric form a pincushion on the opposite side. Check to see if you need to move the fabric to avoid creases and make any adjustments. Fold in the fabric and hot glue it to the underside of the lid. Trim away any excess fabric and if you’re looking for ultimate precision, you can use a piece of card the size of the lid and use hot glue to secure the fabric edges. Once this is done you can line the band with a small dab of glue and insert the pincushion into it, pressing firmly. Add the lid and fill the jar full of essential sewing bits and there you have a small sewing kit!

If you’re looking for a more personalised present, why not try creating a chalkboard mug. Simple and easy, the whole family can make one. All you need is a plain mug and some ceramic/porcelain chalkboard paint.

Make sure your mug is clean and dry; you don’t want to be painting a dirty mug! If you want to paint only a section of the mug, use strong tape to cover the part you don’t want to paint. Simply apply the paint with a brush and wipe off any mistakes. When you’re happy with your painted section, peel off the tape and leave to dry for 24hours, and then bake it in the oven for 35 minutes. Use chalk to write the recipient’s name on and viola, a personalised chalkboard mug!
