How to clean your diamond jewellery
Think about your cherished diamond ring. You probably wear it every day, and perhaps have wondered, what is the best way to clean it?
Diamonds aren’t forever
A diamond is the hardest stone on earth, but this doesn’t mean it won’t get dirty or isn’t susceptible to damage. You don’t ever want to use household cleaners to clean your diamond because they actually may be harmful. Chlorine (as in household bleach) or abrasives (such as household cleansers or toothpaste) should never be used when cleaning diamonds, especially those set in jewellery.
These erode some of the metals often used in diamond settings, and may loosen prongs, or even dissolve the metal completely. Just handling a diamond with your fingers provides enough oils from your skin to alter the way your diamond looks.
TIP: You should always take off your jewellery when doing household chores and any time you’re using chemicals.
However, there are times when you can’t avoid getting hairspray, moisturisers or other substances on your ring which dulls the brilliance of the stone. For this reason alone, you should clean your diamonds frequently to both remove build-up and make it sparkle like new.
Do it right
The best way to clean your diamond and make it sparkle like new is to use a professional diamond cleaner like Connoisseurs Precious Jewellery Cleaner or Connoisseurs Diamond Dazzle Stik. These products have been specifically formulated to be safe for cleaning diamonds as well as the setting. They even contain special polymers that can fill in tiny scratches in the stone that dull the shine.
Start by closing the drain on your sink. If you’re using Connoisseurs Precious Jewellery Cleaner, it’s easy, open the jar and soak your diamond for 30 seconds. Take your jewellery out using the strainer and brush it with our specialized bristle brush made for getting between pongs and settings. Rinse with warm water and dry with a lint free cloth.
TIP: For an extra professional polish, use Connoisseurs Jewellery Buffs to shine and control tarnish on your diamonds setting.
If you’re using the Diamond Dazzle Stik, take off the cap and twist the end until you see the blue gel come out of the brush. Wet your jewellery with warm water and brush your diamond.
Make sure you brush all the surfaces of the diamond and get between the prongs, underneath the diamond and behind the setting. The bristles are specially made to get in these tight spaces. Once you’re done brushing the diamond, rinse it with warm water. Use a lint free cloth to dry.
