We work hard to land the perfect job and spend ages finding a partner we can live with, choosing a house we like and starting a family. Yet on average, we spend 52.6 minutes a day commuting between our fabulous work places and our lovely homes in Britain. People living or working in the London area even have an average commute of 75.2 minutes a day. If you've got every other aspect of your life sorted out, it makes sense to perfect this in-between time as well.
If you know what you want...
Just because you're over 35, doesn't mean you shouldn't look for a car that's fun to drive and makes pedestrians turn their head. Your colleagues or partner may joke that you're entering your mid-life crisis, but you've worked for it so you've earned it. If you've always fancied a cool convertible, an exciting sports car or a masculine Hummer, just go for it. After all, you only live once so you should make the most of it now that you can.
Chances are your partner's got a hideous but practical hatchback – which is a good thing, because you can use that one for the weekly shop and taxiing the kids. Your commute car could even be a sexy two-seater such as the Lotus Elise.
Finding your dream car
Perhaps you've decided to rev up your life with an ultra-high-performance car, but don't know yet whether a Porsche Boxter, a BMW X5 or maybe even a Jaguar would suit you best. Lucky you – you get to spend so many weekends test driving all these expensive toys!
Actually, most of the research can be done from home – you can usually find more details about the specs and performance of specific cars online than in-store; the internet is useful to find the best dealer and you can even compare car insurance quotes online. But for the most important test, you need to take a seat behind the wheel, turn the key in the ignition and hit the motorway. How does that make you feel? Are you immediately comfortable? Does it speed up your heart beat? Are you one with your suit of armour; one with the road you're on; one with the landscapes you're crossing?
The perfect car combines a stylish design with plenty of oomph in the engine. There are so many super cars out there that it might seem impossible to find the best one for you. But you will know your dream machine when you drive it. It's a dazzling experience of power and control that will make you forget where you came from and forget where you're going. It's an experience that can best be compared to falling in love – it will fill you with desire to possess this specific car, no matter how impractical and expensive it is.
The decision
Once you've found your super car, there's no way back. You're going to have to buy it. The most difficult part might be convincing your partner that you actually need it. But most partners will understand if you tell them how much time you're spending in your vehicle every month. Spending five to ten hours a week in the same old Ford Focus can be pretty depressing after a couple of years. Compare the car of your dreams to something your partner values greatly – like a new kitchen, the dog, an ergonomic bed or a designer dress that you can wear every day.
Once you've convinced your partner, you can start looking into more practical matters. Find out which dealer has the best offer – you might even want to travel to the other side of the country to get a good deal. You'll also have to find out which insurance company is best for your new car. Since your car will probably be quite expensive, you will probably want full coverage. You can easily compare car insurance policies and quotes with one of the many comparison sites on the internet. It's better to look into this beforehand so that you don't have to worry about it when you just want to hit the road with your new purchase.
