Rich men don’t want pre-nups

Last week, we witnessed the once ‘unacceptable’ concept of prenuptial-agreements set to become legally binding in the near future.

Currently, pre-nups – contracts drawn up by couples concerning the division of their assets should they divorce – may be considered in a divorce case, but are otherwise not regarded as legal documents.

However, a poll conducted by law firm  Mischon de Reya found that only 8% of the 200 professional men they interviewed want to or have signed a pre-nuptial agreement.

It would seem that most high-flying city boys (56%) believe that their relationships are strong and secure enough not to require the signing of a pre-nup, while two thirds expressed that assets should be spilt equally in the case of a divorce.

Barbara Reeves, one of the partners of Mischon de Reya commented on the findings, by calling men “unrealistic” in their expectations of marriage and she may have a point – nearly half of all marriages in the UK end in divorce.

Give us your opinions on pre-nuptial agreements. What do you think about them? Should they be legally binding? Do you have a pre-nup? Let us know!
