Hidden dangers at home? Give your home a safety check-up and put your mind at rest
It is easy to feel safe in your own home but you may not be as safe as you think.
Statistically, your home is a one of the most hazardous places to be – the figures are alarming. 2.7 million people are injured in their own home every year. And according to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), over 4,000 deaths per annum are the result of accidents in the home. Many of these accidents are preventable with some simple safety know-how.
Care and a little forward-planning (like compiling an inventory) can ensure that you are safe at home. Whether you are moving into a new property or want to check the safety-status of your current home, here are some simple-to-make safety checks:
Repairs
1) Is the building itself in a good state of repair? Accidents are more likely to happen as things wear out
2) Attend to cracks, leaks and breaks as soon as possible before they lead to more damage
3) Make sure you have adequate home insurance from a reputable brand like Tesco to carry out potentially costly repairs
Electricity
4) Are cables in good condition and properly insulated? Ensure that excess lengths of cable are fixed out of the way
5) Sockets must not be overloaded. Also check that light fittings have the correct wattage of bulb and appliances are fitted with right fuses
Floors
6) Are walk-ways and staircases clutter free, to reduce the risk of falling? Carpets should also be firmly fixed and loose rugs held in place with non-slip pads
7) Be aware of slippery surfaces. Bathrooms should have non-slip flooring and grab handles should be fitted in the shower or bath
Fixtures and Fittings
8) Is furniture standing firmly so that it does not wobble or tip over? Also check that hooks, handles and shelves are securely attached
9) Is there any glass that may be difficult to notice, such as a glass door? This can be made more visible by using decorative stickers
10) Consider fitting finger-pinch guards and childproof fastenings to doors
Fire-hazards
11) Are smoke alarms fitted correctly? These should be tested at least once a month
12) Check that fire extinguishers are available. There should also be a fire blanket in the kitchen
13) If your house has an open fire, always use a fire guard and ensure that the chimney is swept regularly
Note: being active on twitter and facebook are fast becoming a potential hazard when it comes to getting home insurance. This recent article highlights how giving away too much information about your whereabouts could cause problems.
