Five things you might not know about Dr Hilary…

  1. He qualified in 1976 at Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, north west London.
  2. Two years later, he moved to the South Atlantic island of Tristan da Cunha, to become the only medical officer for the entire population in this remote location.
  3. He landed a telly job as the TV-am doctor in 1989.
  4. Dr Hilary is a patron of the Meningitis Research Foundation, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.
  5. Aged 56, the doctor was one of the oldest competitors on the ITV1 show, Dancing On Ice.
