Raise your glasses!

If you ever needed an excuse to have that cheeky glass of wine after work then this might be it! Those of you who enjoy a couple of drinks in the evening are more likely to live longer than non-drinkers…

We all know that drinking too much is bad news for your health, but scientists at the University of Texas, Austin have found that moderate drinkers live longer than heavy drinkers and those who don’t drink at all. The study looked at people aged between 55 and 65 over a twenty-year period and revealed that those with the shortest lives were non-drinkers, followed by heavy drinkers. But it was moderate drinkers who came out on top and were found to live the longest.

Why? Moderate drinkers who like a bit of a tipple (defined as one to three drinks a night, preferably red wine) are more likely to be sociable and happy. This improves mental and physical health, leading to a higher life expectancy.

The study found that teetotallers tend to be of a lower class, and don’t drink in social settings such as pubs or bars due to lack of disposable income – which can also lead to stress related illnesses.  And of course, we all know that heavy drinking has many health implications that can impact on mortality rates.

Although the odd glass of wine or two can benefit your health, the authors of the study still warn against excessive drinking – it’s all about moderation!

Now, pass us the Pinot Grigio…
