Not everyone's feeling in the pink – how you can help others for free

While we are all feeling ‘in the pink’, we don’t necessarily focus much on medical matters. However, when we aren’t well, we look to medical professionals to make us feel comfortable and, hopefully, to heal us.

Learning Disability Week this year ran from 21 to 27 June and highlighted the bad experiences that some people with learning disabilities suffer, often due to ignorance or misunderstanding, when they have to undergo medical treatment. And that, with today’s modern medicine and highly evolved procedures, is sad.

The charity Self Unlimited is working hard to raise positive awareness of people with learning disabilities and to help dispel such ignorance. For over forty years, the charity has provided individually tailored housing and support services that enable people with learning disabilities to fulfil personal ambitions, to live more independently and to take more control over their own lives.

This means giving people the kind of support that enables them to feel safe and secure at all times. A friendly face and a smile when people most need it; professional advice and the knowledge gained from having provided services for those forty years, and the services themselves, which are rated amongst the top ten per cent in the country by the Care Quality Commission. It all adds up to an organisation that is passionate about what it does and, more importantly, the people it serves.

How about joining them in helping people with learning disabilities to lead their lives just as others do, with the same rights and responsibilities and an equal claim to fair and just medical treatment?

HOW YOU CAN HELP FOR FREE

Would you consider taking a pink Self Unlimited Home Money Box to place somewhere in your home or workplace to collect loose change in support of their services? If you would, then email fundraising@selfunlimited.co.uk; telephone 0116 279 3225, extension 1110, or check out their website www.selfunlimited.co.uk.

Coins placed ‘in the pink’ would definitely help them make a real and lasting difference in many vulnerable people’s lives.
