The next in our series of blogs exploring advance skincare sees Jennifer Luyt of Renew Medica answering concerns relating to sun damaged skin…

Before you bare you need to prepare and repair,' says Jennifer Luyt. As Renew Medica's expert in advanced skincare Jennifer advises on the treatments and planning that need to be considered to ensure your skin is healthy, looks and feels good by the time you banish the winter woollies and uncover for summer.

'People don't know some treatments need to be planned weeks or months in advance of the summer,' Jennifer says.

'Many clients, men and women, initially come to me for hair removal on their legs, bikini line, or backs expecting immediate results. But skin needs to be prepared before we start a treatment, for example we are not able to remove hair if our client already has a tan. 'They also believe that hair free, exfoliated and moisturised skin with the correct sun protection is all they need to worry about. However good they look, during a consultation they realise they are only protecting skin that in many cases is already damaged', she explains. 'At Renew Medica, we provide leading advice in advanced skincare and proven treatments to repair and protect skin for the long-term, not just for the summer months.'

Is my skin sun damaged?
Probably, yes. Sun damage, caused by frequent exposure to harmful ultraviolet (UV ) rays, affects millions of men andwomen. Did you know sunburn in childhood can double the risk of skin cancer? The problems are not necessarily immediate and can take years to develop.

What happens if my sun damaged skin is left unchecked?
It can have a dramatic and lasting effect on the look and feel of your skin and will contribute to premature ageing. Sun damaged skin is evident not only by lines and wrinkles, but also by rough skin texture, irregular pigmentation, (sun spots, age spots or liver spots) fine blood vessels, skin laxity and large pores.

How can I rejuvenate my skin?
During a consultation at Renew Medica, your skin is scanned to reveal the extent of sun damage. This reveals what is happening beneath the surface of your skin and the results of a lifetime's exposure to the sun. It can be alarming, but an expert practitioner will explain what the scan shows and then tailor treatments to suit your skin. This is likely to include a combination of skin peels and IPL (intense pulsed light photo-rejuvenation). These treatments are safe with proven results.

What results will I see?
The texture of your skin will be improved, fine lines and wrinkles visibly reduced, pores in the skin will be less pronounced and the reflectivity of the skin increased.
