Women who drink in moderation are more likely to stay slim than teetotallers, according to a new study.

Some 19,000 women were involved in the US study which took place over 13 years and those who drank no alcohol gained the most weight,

even after accounting for lifestyle, dietary factors and things like smoking and exercise.

Moderate drinking was classed as drinking up to about two 150ml glasses of wine a day. The women who took part in the survey were aged 39 and over and were of normal weight when the study started.

They all gained weight but it was the women who drank in moderation who gained the least. One theory was that instead of snacking, these women would have alcohol instead, cutting down on their overall calorie intake.
