Teenage pregnancies down

Some 41,325 young women under 18 fell pregnant in 2008 - down by 4% from the year before. Of these women 49% had an abortion, compared with 50% of the 42,988 pregnancies in 2007.


Teenage pregnancies were supposed to halve by this year – a pledge made by the government in 1998 – but it is widely expected this target will be missed. The government says it is the lowest rate for 20 years..
