A general and vascular London surgeon, who was featured in at home, has been putting his medical skills to good use in Haiti, following the horrific earthquake that has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives.

Dr David Nott, who has been in Haiti as a volunteer, hit the headlines when he became involved in the case of a three-month-old baby Landini, who was orphaned and had to have her right arm amputated. Medics, including Dr Nott, were desperately trying to get Landini the treatment she needed in the UK.

Working at Medecins sans Frontieres hospital, Dr Nott has performed about 10 operations a day on earthquake victims who have suffered trauma and crush injuries. He has also performed life-saving surgery on gunshot victims.

‘To be honest I find the whole experience extremely distressing, going around the wards, seeing children with amputated arms and legs screaming for their mothers and fathers, when there are no mother and father because they have died in the earthquake,’ Dr Nott said. And he’s not the only one who is devoting his time to help the victims of the Haiti earthquake. Music mogul Simon Cowell’s charity single is the fastest selling charity single this century. Featuring stars such as Leona Lewis, Mariah Carey and X Factor winner Joe McElderry, the single is a cover of the REM track Everybody Hurts.
