TOP TEN YOGA TIPS FOR BEGINNERS by KATY APPLETON
- I would suggest having a proper yoga mat, as there is a real risk of slipping on any other surface. Wear comfortable clothes that your body can move freely in. Yoga is normally practised in bare feet.
- You should leave two hours minimum after eating to practise.
- Create a relaxing atmosphere. A suggestion might be to light a candle, some incense or even an aromatherapy oil burner.
- Turn off your telephones and TV. Gentle music in the background can be inspiring, although for some it may be a distraction. Find what works for you each time you practise. Make a mental note that no one can disturb you while you are practising; this time is for you and you alone.
- Try to create the same space in your home to practise everyday. If you can keep your mat down on the floor all the time do so, as this will remind you to step on it to practise!!!!
- To start with set yourself a goal to practise Yoga for 10-15 minutes daily, everybody has time for that. Then gradually build up to a practise that is suitable and assessable to your life. Eventually your practise will become part of your everyday routine and, like not brushing your teeth; youll know when you have missed it!!!
- If you have any long-standing injuries or illnesses please consult your doctor before you begin to practise yoga.
- Dont forget to breathe while you practice.
- The mind loves to wander to the past or future, try and stay in the present moment. It helps to keep the mind on the breath, observing what its doing and how it feels. By doing this the mind stays in the now.
- Be aware of how you are feeling each time you start your practise. It will always be different; sometimes the energy is high or a little low, so listen to what your body is telling you. There is no competition in yoga, with yourself or others. All you can ask is that you have a certain willingness to try, patience in your learning, awareness and concentration for progression and happiness in all you do! Enjoy :)
