Sports bras on test

gunnell-aug12-sportsbraYou may look fit in your fab gym kit, but that padded bra underneath gets a big thumbs down. We put some sports bras through their paces, to see what you should be wearing.

Panache Sport, B-H
£35, Panache-lingerie.com
Tester: Lynne Maxwell, 28, 34B
Exercise: Dance classes and DVDs

’What a difference this new bra makes to any standard bra I’ve worn for dancing before. It really holds me in, to the point that my boobs barely move at all. The elastic underneath the underwiring is a firm fit and the fabric is lightweight, cool and comfortable, while the wide straps offer extra support. The smooth inner cups mean there’s no friction at all when I jump about. This is the perfect sports bra.’

NX Sports Bra, B-DD
£16, Next.co.uk
Tester: Stella Kwok, 26, 32B
Exercise: Cross trainer workout

‘This is comfortable enough when using a cross trainer, but it wouldn’t cope with anything more strenuous like running. Its design is simple but not very attractive, yet it gave me a good amount of support for my size. It may not be ideal of you’re bigger built on top and in need of being held in more. The material is a little thin, which didn’t fill me with confidence, but it did the job – despite looking like a crop top.’

Anita Active Momentum, B-H
£59, Anita.com
Tester: Dahlia Cuby, 39, 36C
Exercise: Circuit training

‘I do a regular circuit class in a gym full of mirrors, so not only am I looking for good support in a bra, but one that gives me a good shape, too. I put this bra through its paces and I’m pleased to say that while I worked up a sweat with tough chest presses and press-ups, my bra stayed dry, so no unsightly wet patches. Once I got used to the underwire, I found it comfortable and effective. It washed well, too.’

Shock Absorber Ultimate
Run Bra, B-F
£37, Shockabsorber.co.uk
Tester: Jessie Bland, 21, 34B
Exercise: Running outdoors

‘I feel quite the Olympian in this patriotic red, white and blue bra. Aesthetically, it really looks the part – so no need to hide it under a baggy T-shirt. The adjustable straps at the back are a soft (but sturdy) rubber and leave me feeling securely in place – ideal for running. For those seeking an attractive bra, which will help you get your bod looking equally good, it’s a top choice!’

Elle Sport Bra Top, S-XL
£12.99, Mandmdirect.com
Tester: Holly Quayle, 27, 32B (small)
Exercise: Treadmill running

‘I tried this out during my staple gym activity – the treadmill – a workout that really gets my B-cups bouncing! While this bra is made of light stretch cotton material, making it extra soft, super breathable and easy to pull on, the downside was that it doesn’t reign in my boobs as much as I had hoped. It would be great for something less vigorous, like Pilates.’

Shock Absorber Active
Multi Sports, A-HH
£30, Shockabsorber.co.uk
Tester: Athena Demetriou, 29, 32C
Exercise: Hip-hop dance class

‘I usually just wear a standard bra and always have either a strap falling down or just a lack of support, but this bra keeps everything in! The straps are extra wide, which I find comfy and it is quite a firm fit – although this takes a bit of getting used to as it’s a lot tighter than my other underwear, but that might be just because normally I’m not wearing the right bra!’

Lonsdale Crop Top, B-E
£7, Sportsdirect.com
Tester: Lucy Mouzouris, 30, 34B
Exercise: Spinning class

‘I have been spinning for many years now and I’m ashamed to admit I’ve never worn a sports bra! This Lonsdale Crop Top is fantastic. Spinning is a very high impact activity but this top definitely gives me the support and shape I need and is a perfect fit. The material is very soft and the straps don’t dig into your skin or leave any red marks. It’s comfy and looks pretty in pink, so it scored top marks from me, and I’ll wear it again!’
