Nicky Hambleton-Jones picks out this season’s essentials…
The hourglass is one of the key shapes this autumn/winter – think Marilyn Monroe. If you have a distinct lack of curves, the perfect solution is to invest in this season’s waist cinching belt. The bigger the better. If you want to incorporate a touch of the military trend opt for one with a multi-buckle effect.
|Indigo stretch straight leg jeans
If you’re looking for a timeless, fail-safe pair of jeans – don’t follow fashion. Opt instead for a classic straight-leg jean in indigo. This cut elongates the leg whilst the dark blue hides a multitude of imperfections.
|Lean tailored coat with military styling
Once again, winter lends itself to a touch of military. This season it’s less obvious than in previous years – it could just be the lapels on a jacket, the multi-pockets on a skirt or the braiding detail on a coat. The easiest place to incorporate it would be in your winter coat. Simple gold buttons will do.
The sexy secretary is back and causing a riot down the high street in a pencil skirt and killer heels. Nothing flatters the female form more than a fitted pencil teamed with blouse and waisted belt.
Coloured patent leather – particularly purple, red and pink – is the must-have material for handbags and shoes this year. It will add sex appeal to any outfit, no matter what your age. If you really want to be on trend choose a pair with a cone-shaped heel.
Whether tailored, fitted or voluminous, this season’s jacket is definitely cropped. How you wear it or the shape you choose is up to you. I’m loving the trend for swing-style jackets worn with fitted shirts and high-waisted skinny jeans. The skirt suit is another must-have item this season. Stretch it beyond the office by wearing the jacket with jeans or the skirt with a black polo neck and black tights for a more relaxed look.
|Black wide-leg trousers
Skinny is on the way out. It’s all about wide-leg trousers this season – infinitely more flattering for the majority of female forms. I would invest some good money in finding a fabulous pair of black wide-leg trousers that will go the distance and give you a leaner silhouette. Best teamed with a fitted shirt and a patent or metallic belt.
Nothing is as classically sexy as a fabulous fitted shirt. It’s such a versatile piece of clothing and will stand the test of time. Team with jeans or black trousers for classic tailored chic. Layer under a waistcoat or cropped jacket or team with a tulip skirt and waisted belt to create the perfect hourglass silhouette.
The knee-high boot has been king pin for years now, but the ankle boot is set to knock it off its pedestal. More versatile, you’re not restricted to boot-leg trousers and they’re perfect for chunky calves.
|Metallic sheen shift dress
This season look out for jewelled embellishment on necklines and a metallic sheen on fabrics. Why not keep it simple and combine both influences? Invest in a fabulous shift dress which is sure to make a statement, whatever the occasion.
